Ontario Minister of Research and Innovation Reza Moridi announced $35 million in matching funding from the Ontario Research Funding for University of Toronto researchers, including ECE professor Ted Sargent. Sargent’s group secured $3.4 million for research into nanomaterials for energy.

The funding matches grants announced by the Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI) in January. In total, U of T has received over $100 million in research support thanks to the two funding agencies.

“The University of Toronto continues to shine nationally and internationally, and that’s in large part because of the outstanding research going on at this university,” said Minister Moridi. “Our government is proud of that. I am proud of that.”

Sargent is one of three Engineering faculty members to receive ORF funding; the other two are Omer Gulder of UTIAS for his work on High-Pressure Blow-Down Facility for Gas Turbine Combustion Research, and Charles Mims for an Ontario Centre for Characterization of Advanced Materials.

“As researchers across Ontario continue to excel, their work depends increasingly on access to state-of-the-art equipment and infrastructure,” said U of T President, Professor David Naylor. “We are therefore very grateful to the Province of Ontario for this forward-thinking investment. It will support world-leading innovation ranging from fundamental science in diverse disciplines to projects involving technologies that have rapid industrial applications.”

Minister Moridi announced funding for 17 researchers at seven institutions around Toronto, including the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, The Hospital for Sick Children, Ryerson University, Sunnybrook Hospital, University Health Network and York University, to support investment in new facilities that will foster ground-breaking research.
