Donor-Funded Scholarships & Awards
Through the generous contributions of our donors, several scholarships and awards have been established for graduate students in Electrical and Computer Engineering. Eligibility requirements and application procedures are outlined below.
Student Application Required
Scholarships & awards in this section require an application from the student. Students must apply by 9AM on Jan. 19, 2026. Full application instructions are outlined under 'Student Application Instructions' at the bottom of this page.
Viola Carless Smith Research Fellowship in Electrical Engineering
- Value: Approx. $10,000
- Recipients per year: 1
- Eligibility requirements (to be eligible, all of the following must be met)
- Degree program: MASc or PhD
- Field of study: Electronics or Computer Engineering
- Domestic/international status: Must be domestic
- Financial need: Required + must be OSOTF eligible
- Other requirements:
- Must demonstrate academic excellence
- Preference will be given to PhD students who are beyond their period of guaranteed funding but within their degree time limit in Winter 2026 (students on approved program extensions are not eligible)
- Degree program: MASc or PhD
Professor V.L. Henderson and M. Bassett Research Fellowship in Electrical Engineering
- Value: Approx. $8,000
- Recipients per year: 1
- Eligibility requirements (to be eligible, all of the following must be met)
- Degree program: MASc or PhD
- Field of study: Electrical Engineering
- Domestic/international status: Must be domestic
- Financial need: Required + must be OSOTF eligible

Ewing Rae Graduate Scholarship

- Intended for a recipient who intends to work or conduct further study in Canada

Allen Yen Scholarship
- Value: Approx. $3,000

- Eligibility requirements (to be eligible, all of the following must be met)

- Field of study: Electrical Engineering

- Financial need: Required + must be OSOTF eligible

- Must demonstrate academic excellence

Czeslaw and Irene Klawe Scholarship

- Other requirements:
- Must demonstrate academic excellence
- Preference will be given to students of Polish heritage (but all students who meet the other eligibility requirements are encouraged to apply)
- Preference will be given to PhD students who are beyond their period of guaranteed funding but within their degree time limit in Winter 2026 (students on approved program extensions are not eligible)

Gabriel and Veronica Lengyel Graduate Scholarship
- Value: Approx. $1,700
- Recipients per year: 1
- Eligibility requirements (to be eligible, all of the following must be met)

- Financial need: Not required
- Other requirements:
- Preference will be given to students conducting a portion of their thesis research in Germany and/or a doctoral student in the Max Planck Institute. Secondary preference will be given to students conducting a portion of their research abroad.

Professor Nomination Required
Scholarships & awards in this section require a nomination from an ECE professor. Professors will be sent nomination instructions by the end of November 2025.
Paul Biringer Graduate Scholarship
- Value: Approx. $4,500

- Field of study: Electrical Engineering (preference for low frequency magnetic devices)
- Domestic/international status: Must be international

H.W. Price Research Fellowship in Electrical Engineering

Daryani Award

- Recipients per year: 1 (one additional award available in 2025-26 cycle)

Application Procedures
Student Application Instructions
In order to apply, students must complete the following by 9AM on Jan. 19, 2026. Late or incomplete applications cannot be considered.
- Complete the application form.
- Your supervisor must also submit a letter of support by the deadline. ECE professors have been sent an email with instructions on Dec. 23, 2025.
- It is the student’s responsibility to (1) request the letter of support early enough for the supervisor to meet the deadline and (2) remind the supervisor, if needed, to meet the deadline.
- A single letter of support can be submitted by your supervisor if you are applying for multiple awards
Professor Nomination Instructions
In order to nominate a student, professors must submit their nominations by 9AM on Jan. 19, 2026. ECE professors have been sent an email with instructions on Dec. 23, 2025.
