There are more than 7,000 ECE graduates in the Greater Toronto area alone, and over 11,000 all around the world. Being separated by time and distance can make it a challenge to stay in touch with old classmates and friends. If you have a story, photo or announcement you would like to share, please send it to jessica.macinnis@utoronto.ca. Be sure to include the year you graduated in your message.

Fourth Year & Alumni Celebration 2020

The University of Toronto is recommending cancellation of all discretionary events that are not required as part of courses or academic requirements.

The health and wellness of our ECE community remains our top priority, and as such the Fourth Year & Alumni Celebration on April 3, 2019 was cancelled.

Alumni Reunion 2020

During this challenging situation with COVID-19, the University  made the difficult decision to cancel Alumni Reunion 2020. While we regret we will not see you this spring, our thoughts are very much with the well-being of all our alumni and their families. We wish you the best as we face the challenges ahead together.

ECE’s Fall Alumni Networking Event 2019

Graduates from all years attended the Fall Alumni Networking Reception on Thursday, November 21, 2019 to catch up with their fellow ECE classmates and hear ECE Professor Nicolas Papernot discuss his research.Graphic comparing an image of a panda

“Why is my panda a gibbon? Making machine learning secure and trustworthy.”

Machine learning is pervasive: from the translation feature of our phones to the boarding pass checks of airport gates — but individuals often have little understanding or awareness of how data is being analyzed and why. It’s no surprise that machine learning models have been called “black-boxes” but do we understand what’s behind the magic?

As machine learning increasingly underpins important aspects of your life — whether it’s how your driverless car will negotiate a turn at a busy intersection, which university your child will be admitted to or if you’ll qualify for a bank loan — it is more important than ever that we can trust machine learning.

Professor Nicolas Papernot from The Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) and the Vector Institute tackles security and privacy questions that impact machine learning.

ECE’s Fall Alumni Networking Event 2018

Graduates from all years attended ECE’s Fall Alumni Networking Reception on Thursday, November 15, 2018, to catch up with former classmates and hear ECE Professor David Lie and Faculty of Law Professor Lisa Austin discuss their research.

(left to right) Professors Lisa Austin and David Lie

“OK Google, who is collecting my data and why?”
With every swipe on their phones and click on their computer, today’s Internet companies are able to collect more and more information about individuals — often without individuals understanding or even being aware of what is being collected and why. Privacy policies, the means by which companies are required to inform individuals of this collection and obtain their consent are simply ineffective.

As individuals are becoming more and more transparent through their data footprint, the technology that is driving this dataficiation is becoming more and more opaque — and the legal world is struggling to keep up.

Professor David Lie from The Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering and Professor Lisa Austin from the Faculty of Law are collaborating to tackle privacy issues where technology and law meet.

Alumni of all ages are invited back to Skule to hear Professors Lie and Austin discuss their Information Technology, Transparency and Transformation (IT3) Lab that was established to create new technologies and practices that address the data-transparency divide.

Professor Joyce Poon.

Professor Joyce Poon

Beyond Moore’s Law: Light, Brain, and Computing
Moore’s Law is ending. This opens new opportunities for unconventional microsystems and nanodevices that can fundamentally transform computing beyond the next 10 to 20 years. Much inspiration can be drawn from the human brain, which is orders of magnitudes more power efficient than today’s computers for many cognitive tasks. Integrated photonics on silicon is an important technology for the beyond Moore era. In this talk, I will begin by describing how foundry silicon integrated photonics enable high performance computing and communication systems. Next, I will describe electronic and optoelectronic nanodevices with steep turn-on characteristics using phase-change materials. Finally, I will describe nanophotonic-based neurotechnology for brain-activity mapping. In the long term, these efforts unite to enable new types of brain-inspired (i.e., neuromorphic) computing systems and interfaces to the brain.

Joyce Poon is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Toronto, where she holds the Canada Research Chair in Integrated Photonic Devices. She and her team specialize in integrated photonics on silicon. Dr. Poon obtained the Ph.D. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Caltech in 2007 and 2003 respectively, and the B.A.Sc. in Engineering Science (physics option) from the University of Toronto in 2002. Recognitions she has received include an ECE Department Teaching Award (2017), the McCharles Prize for Early Research Career Distinction (2013), MIT TR35 (2012), and the IBM Faculty Award (2010, 2011). She is a Fellow of the Optical Society (class of 2018)

Alumni returned to Skule to talk Neuromodulation at the 2016 Fall Alumni Networking Reception

Neural networks, closed looped control, the transmission of information through electrical signals: it turns out neuroscience and electrical and computer engineering have more in common than you might think. An emerging field uniting medicine and engineering is neuromodulation, whereby implanted electrical devices stimulate areas of the nervous system to relieve symptoms and treat complex neurological disorders.

Alumni of all ages returned to Skule to hear Professor Milos Popovic discuss the key role electrical and computer engineers play in tackling medicine’s most difficult neurological challenges.

Professor Deepa Kundur (ElecE 9T3, MASc 9T5, PhD 9T9)

Graduates from all years came back to ECE’s Fall Alumni Networking Reception on Wednesday, November 18, 2015, to catch up with former classmates and hear Professor Deepa Kundur discuss her research at the cutting edge of cyber-security.

Systems we rely on every day, from banking to power generation and distribution, are getting ‘smarter’—but introducing this extra layer of connectivity is not without risk. Professor Kundur will speak about the security weaknesses that emerge when our physical infrastructure becomes cyber-enabled, and what we can do to protect it. Her research models complex systems and aims to identify potential security flaws before they cause a crisis.
