Summer Research Awards

General information

A number of summer (May to August) research fellowships are available to undergraduates who have completed the 1st, 2nd or 3rd year in Electrical and Computer Engineering. Selection criteria may include the applicant’s academic background, financial need, and the duties and responsibilities of the applicant in the research project. Application procedures are generally posted below in either March or April and announced by e-mail. 

Summer research fellowships for tenure in summer 2021

Edith Grace Buchan Undergraduate Research Fellowship

There is 1 (one) Edith Grace Buchan Undergraduate Research Fellowship, with a value of approximately $4809, available for tenure in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. This fellowship is to be awarded to one ECE undergraduate student in either the first, second, or third year of studies for work completed on a research project under the supervision of an U of T Engineering Faculty member during the summer (May to August) of 2021. The Department will consider academic standing in the first instance and the duties and responsibilities of the applicant in the research project. The Buchan is open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents or visa students. In the case of visa students, it is the student’s responsibility to ensure that they have clearance, if necessary, from immigration authorities.

Edgar McAllister Foundation Undergraduate Summer Research Awards

There are 2 (two) Edgar McAllister Foundation Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowships available for tenure in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. These fellowships are to be awarded to two Electrical undergraduate students completing either their first, second, or third year of studies.  Preference will be given to students completing their third year. The awards are given to students to work on research projects under the supervision of a U of T Engineering Faculty member over the course of the summer (May to August) of 2021. Financial need is considered, as well as academic standing. The McAllister is open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents or visa students. In the case of visa students, it is the student’s responsibility to ensure that they have clearance, if necessary, from immigration authorities.

Application Form 2021 (doc). Please note that applicants are not required to complete SECTION III of the application form; the Undergraduate Office will provide applications to the ECE Chair for signature. Financial Information is NOT required for this award. In addition to the application form, please include an unofficial ACORN transcript saved as a PDF (applicant’s name must be visible on the ACORN print out – those without will not be accepted).

Please submit your applications by email to ugta.ece@utoronto.ca before the deadline in order to be considered for the award. Please label the PDF document using the following format: LastName, FirstName – AwardName 2021. Incomplete/late applications will not be considered. If multiple applications are sent, only the most recent email will be taken into consideration.

Johannes Michael Holmboe Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowships

There is 1 (one) Johannes Michael Holmboe Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowship with a value of approximately $4620 for students in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering for the summer of 2019. The fellowships are to be awarded to undergraduate students in first, second, or third year for work completed on research projects under the supervision of staff members and/or graduate students during the summer (May to August) of 2019. The Department will consider financial need, academic standing, and the duties and responsibilities of the applicant in the research project.  Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Ontario.
