The paper, entitled “Understanding the Benefits of Open Access in Femtocell Networks: Stochastic Geometric Analysis in the Uplink,” presents a new study to characterize the wireless interference in a two-tier cellular network, where traditional base stations are supplemented by randomly placed femtocell base stations to provide enhanced local service. It contributes to the current debate on whether femtocells should be openly accessed by regular cellular users, giving closed-form expressions for the conditions under which such open access reduces the uplink interference.

MSWiM ’13 was held in Barcelona, Spain from Nov. 3-8, 2013. MSWiM is technically sponsored by the ACM Special Interest Group on Simulation and Modeling, with a focus on performance evaluation of wireless and mobile systems. It carries single-track presentations and full-length proceedings. This year the conference received 160 submissions from 39 countries, and accepted 42 of them as full papers.
