MEng Emphases

M.Eng. students have the option of completing an emphasis in one of the following areas as part of their degree program.

Emphasis in Analytics

Please consult the Engineering Graduate Studies website for the requirements for this emphasis.

Emphasis in Biomedical Engineering

M.Eng. students must successfully complete at least four courses from those listed below. Students may double-count one course at most towards any ECE emphasis.

  • Any JEB 14XXH course
  • ECE 1774H Sensory Cybernetics
  • ECE 2500Y MEng Project (topic in biomedical engineering; counts as one course towards the emphasis)
    Students may include other biomedical engineering-related courses subject to the approval of the ECE Associate Chair for Graduate Studies.

Emphasis in Communications

M.Eng. students must successfully complete at least four courses from those listed below. Students may double-count one course at most towards any ECE emphasis.

  • ECE 537H Random Processes
  • Any ECE 15XXH course
  • ECE 2500Y MEng Project (topic in communications; counts as one course towards the emphasis).

Emphasis in Computer Engineering

M.Eng. students must successfully complete at least four courses from those listed below. Students may double-count one course at most towards any ECE emphasis.

  • ECE 532H Digital Systems Design
  • ECE 540H Optimizing Compilers
  • ECE 552H Computer Architecture

Emphasis in Electromagnetics

M.Eng. students must successfully complete at least four courses from those listed below. Students may double-count one course at most towards any ECE emphasis.

Emphasis in Electronics

M.Eng. students must successfully complete at least four courses from those listed below. Students may double-count one course at most towards any ECE emphasis.

Emphasis in Energy Systems

Emphasis in Entrepreneurship, Leadership, Innovation and Technology in Engineering (ELITE)

Please consult the Engineering Graduate Studies website for the requirements for this emphasis. This website also lists courses that can be used to fulfill the ELITE emphasis by category:

  • Please note: APS courses are considered non-technical. Students who choose to complete the ELITE emphasis will therefore be required to complete six technical graduate courses in addition to the four APS courses required for the ELITE emphasis, for a total of ten graduate courses.
