Donor-Funded Scholarships & Awards

Through the generous contributions of our donors, several scholarships and awards have been established for graduate students in Electrical and Computer Engineering. The eligibility requirements and application procedures for each competition are outlined below.

Viola Carless Smith Research Fellowship in Electrical Engineering

  • At least one fellowship will be awarded annually.
  • Recipients will be graduate students in the field of Electronics or Computer Hardware who demonstrate good academic ability and significant financial need.
  • Recipients must also be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada.
  • Priority will be given to Ph.D. students who are beyond their funding period (i.e., in year 5 or greater of program registration).
  • The application package must include a cover letter from the student (to address their specific qualifications for the fellowship), a letter of support from the research supervisor, the U of T transcript (ACORN printout), curriculum vitae, and a completed Financial Need Assessment Form.
  • Students must submit their cover letter, transcript, curriculum vitae, and Financial Need Assessment Form as one scanned PDF file to janine.harper@utoronto.ca by TBA (or the next business day if the 15th falls on a weekend). The supervisor must also submit their letter of support directly to janine.harper@utoronto.ca, also by TBA (or the next business day if the 15th falls on a weekend).

V. L. Henderson and M. Bassett Research Fellowship in Electrical Engineering

  • At least one fellowship will be awarded annually.
  • Recipients will be graduate students in the field of Electrical Engineering who demonstrate good academic ability and significant financial need.
  • Recipients must also be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada.
  • Priority will be given to Ph.D. students who are beyond their funding period (i.e., in year 5 or greater of program registration).
  • The application package must include a cover letter from the student (to address their specific qualifications for the fellowship), a letter of support from the research supervisor, the U of T transcript (ACORN printout), curriculum vitae, and a completed Financial Need Assessment Form.
  • Students must submit their cover letter, transcript, curriculum vitae, and Financial Need Assessment Form as one scanned PDF file to janine.harper@utoronto.ca by TBA (or the next business day if the 15th falls on a weekend). Ewing Rae Graduate Scholarship

  • At least one scholarship will be awarded annually.
  • Recipients will be graduate students in the field of Electrical Engineering who demonstrate high academic achievement, as well as the intention to work or conduct further study in Canada.
  • Recipients must also demonstrate significant financial need.
  • Priority will be given to Ph.D. students who are beyond their funding period (i.e., in year 5 or greater of program registration).
  • The application package must include a cover letter from the student (to address their specific qualifications for the scholarship), a letter of support from the research supervisor, the U of T transcript (ACORN printout), curriculum vitae, and a completed Financial Need Assessment Form.
    • Please note that although the Financial Need Assessment Form implies otherwise, there is no citizenship requirement for the Ewing Rae Scholarship. International students are eligible to apply.

Allen Yen Scholarship

  • At least one scholarship will be awarded annually.
  • Recipients will be graduate students in the field of Electrical Engineering who demonstrate high academic achievement and significant financial need.
  • Recipients must also be Canadian Citizens or permanent residents of Canada.
  • Priority will be given to Ph.D. students who are beyond their funding period (i.e., in year 5 or greater of program registration).
  • The application package must include a cover letter from the student (to address their specific qualifications for the scholarship), a letter of support from the research supervisor, the U of T transcript (ACORN printout), curriculum vitae, and a completed Financial Need Assessment Form.

Czeslaw and Irene Klawe Scholarship

  • At least one scholarship will be awarded annually.
  • Recipients will be graduate students in the field of Electrical or Computer Engineering who demonstrate high academic achievement and financial need.
  • Preference will be given to students of Polish heritage.
  • Ph.D. students who are beyond their funding period (i.e., in year 5 or greater of program registration) are eligible for the scholarship.
  • The application package must include a cover letter from the student (to address their specific qualifications for the scholarship), a letter of support from the research supervisor, the U of T transcript (ACORN printout), curriculum vitae, and a completed Financial Need Assessment Form.
    • Please note that although the Financial Need Assessment Form implies otherwise, there is no citizenship requirement for the Klawe Scholarship. International students are eligible to apply.

Paul Biringer Graduate Scholarship

  • At least one scholarship will be awarded annually.
  • Recipients will be international graduate students in the field of low frequency magnetic devices who demonstrate academic excellence. In the event that suitable recipients are not identified, international students in the field of Electrical Engineering will be considered.
  • The nomination package must include a letter of support from the research supervisor, a letter of support from a second faculty member, the U of T transcript (ACORN printout), and curriculum vitae.
  • Nomination packages must be submitted as one scanned PDF file to janine.harper@utoronto.ca by January 15 (or the next business day if the 15th falls on a weekend).

H. W. Price Research Fellowship in Electrical Engineering

  • At least one fellowship will be awarded annually.
  • Recipients will be M.A.Sc. students in a field relevant to Hydro One who demonstrate academic excellence. In the event that suitable recipients are not identified, M.A.Sc. students in the field of Electrical Engineering will be considered.
  • There is no citizenship requirement for the Price Fellowship. International students are eligible for nomination.
  • The nomination package must include a letter of support from the research supervisor, a letter of support from a second faculty member, the U of T transcript (ACORN printout), and curriculum vitae.
  • Nomination packages must be submitted as one scanned PDF file to janine.harper@utoronto.ca by January 15 (or the next business day if the 15th falls on a weekend).

Shahid U.H. Qureshi Memorial Scholarship

  • One scholarship will be awarded annually.
  • Recipients will be outstanding graduate students in the field of Communications, as selected by faculty members in the Communications Group in consultation with the family, friends, and associates of Dr. Qureshi.
  • There is no citizenship requirement for the Qureshi Scholarship. International students are eligible for nomination.
  • The nomination package must include a letter of support from the research supervisor, a letter of support from a second faculty member, the U of T transcript (ACORN printout), and curriculum vitae.
  • Nomination packages must be submitted as one scanned PDF file to janine.harper@utoronto.ca by January 15 (or the next business day if the 15th falls on a weekend).

Right Track CAD Graduate Scholarship

  • At least three scholarships will be awarded annually.
  • Recipients will be graduate students in the field of Programmable Logic who demonstrate high academic achievement. In the event that suitable recipients are not identified, graduate students in the field of Computer Engineering will be considered.
  • There is no citizenship requirement for the Right Track Scholarship. International students are eligible for nomination.
  • The nomination package must include a letter of support from the research supervisor, a letter of support from a second faculty member, the U of T transcript (ACORN printout), and curriculum vitae.
  • Nomination packages must be submitted as one scanned PDF file to janine.harper@utoronto.ca by January 15 (or the next business day if the 15th falls on a weekend).

Donald R. Studney Electromagnetics Graduate Award

  • One scholarship will be awarded annually.
  • Recipients will be outstanding graduate students in the field of Electromagnetics in the Edward S. Rogers Sr. Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering, as selected by faculty members in the Electromagnetics Group.
  • There is no citizenship requirement for the Studney Award. International students are eligible for nomination.
  • The nomination package must include a letter of support from the research supervisor, a letter of support from a second faculty member, the U of T transcript (ACORN printout), and curriculum vitae.
  • Nomination packages must be submitted as one scanned PDF file to janine.harper@utoronto.ca by January 15 (or the next business day if the 15th falls on a weekend).

Daryani Graduate Award

  • One scholarship will be awarded annually.
  • Recipients will be outstanding graduate students in the fields of Smart Grid, Internet of Things, Smart Cities, or related technologies, in the Edward S. Rogers Sr. Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
  • There is no citizenship requirement for the Daryani Award. International students are eligible for nomination.
  • The nomination package must include a letter of support from the research supervisor, a letter of support from a second faculty member, the U of T transcript (ACORN printout), and curriculum vitae.
  • Nomination packages must be submitted as one scanned PDF file to janine.harper@utoronto.ca by January 15 (or the next business day if the 15th falls on a weekend).
