Striving to take SAVI to the next level, several student groups from various universities across Canada were hosted at the SAVI Design Challenge Camp in The Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Toronto, supervised by Professor Alberto Leon-Garcia. The camp concluded in a presentation of each group’s work in the presence of industry partners from Bell and TELUS, where the home team, working with Professor Leon-Garcia, garnered the award for the most innovative and creative design.

“Innovation, demo, creativity and the good use of the SAVI testbed are the four criteria I based my decision on,” said Jerome Birot, Director , Technology Strategy at TELUS and one of the judges, who said he was impressed by all the students’ work. “This team really demonstrated that they are thinking outside the box by using Twitter and packaging SAVI into a ready-to-use product for the customer,” added Eron Quek, the Bell representative.

Professor Leon-Garcia expressed his pride in all the groups who attended the camp, in his last words to the contestants, saying that they’ve all put in a lot of work and effort. He hopes for the teams to take their new ideas back to their labs and continue elaborating on them. “The real benefit is your participation in this camp,” said Leon-Garcia. “The award one team won was only the icing on the cake.”
