Nazir Kherani is one of six members of the U of T Engineering community to have been selected by The Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE) and Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) to receive a 2009 Ontario Professional Engineers Award. Presented since 1947, the Ontario Professional Engineers Awards recognize outstanding individuals for engineering excellence and community service.
The focus of Nazir Kherani’s research is photovoltaics, the conversion of solar power to electricity; he and his team are developing technologies that will significantly reduce the cost of this process. Considered a world-leader in this field, he currently leads an initiative called High Efficiency Silicon Photovoltaics, funded by a $5 million grant from the Ontario Ministry for Research and Innovation. Professor Kherani’s research has led to over 100 refereed publications and five patents. He is also the co-author of an undergraduate textbook, Electrical Fundamentals.
“For six members of our community to receive these prestigious awards is both an honour and a testament of our Faculty's strength,” said Cristina Amon, Dean, Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. “We are deeply grateful to OPSE and PEO for recognizing these outstanding colleagues."
The recipients of the Ontario Professional Engineers Awards will be honoured at a gala at the Toronto Congress Centre on November 21, 2009. |
