Registration and Fees

Registration: 2023-24 Academic Year

Please review all instructions and relevant dates thoroughly prior to registering for the academic year.

  • Fees assessment will take place on July 17, 2023; your 2023-24 academic year fees will be visible on ACORN as of that date. Please consult the Student Accounts website for fee and refund schedules, payment procedures, and related information. When navigating the Student Accounts website please note that your academic division is ‘Graduate Studies, School of’.
  • The registration deadline for the 2023 Fall session is September 15.
    • In order to meet the registration deadline it is recommended that students register by September 1.  If making a payment, students are responsible for ensuring that their payment reaches the University by the registration deadline.  The transfer of funds from major Canadian financial institutions normally takes three to five business days. However, transfers from Canadian credit unions and financial institutions from outside Canada can take significantly longer.
    • Failure to register by the deadline will result in the cancellation of the student’s course enrolment.
    • Registration may be possible after the deadline. However, a late fee will be applied.
  • MEng students are registered upon payment of fees.
    • A student cannot remain registered in a given session if they do not enrol in at least one academic activity (i.e., a course or a project).  Failure to enrol in an academic activity by the registration deadline will result in cancellation of a student’s registration.
    • Continuing students: please email us at meng.advising.ece@utoronto.ca if you are considering temporarily stopping-out of the program.
  • MASc and PhD students are registered upon payment of fees or approval of a request to register without payment.
    • Students within their period of guaranteed funding should request to register without payment through ACORN.
      • Select ‘Tuition Fee Deferral’ within the Finances section of the menu on the left side of the screen.
      • If you are unable to successfully register without payment through ACORN, please reach out to us at advising.masc.phd.ece@utoronto.ca.
    • If eligible, students beyond their period of guaranteed funding may request to register without payment by submitting a ‘Register Without Payment’ form to advising.masc.phd.ece@utoronto.ca.
      • Requests should be submitted no later than Sep. 1, 2023.
    • Students who are approved to register without payment on the basis of a graduate funding package may carry a balance in their fees account until April 30, 2024, without accruing any service charges.  Fees are due by April 30, 2024, and are subject to monthly interest charges as of May 15, 2024.
  • Unless a student is approved to register without payment, interest will be charged monthly on any Fall session fees outstanding past September 30, 2023. For students registering for both the Fall and Winter sessions, Winter session fees are due by November 30, 2023, and are subject to monthly interest charges beginning December 15, 2023.
  • Continuing students who will not register for the 2023 Fall session, but will instead start their 2023-24 academic year in the 2024 Winter session, should reach out to the Graduate Office for information on registration and payment deadlines.
    • For new students who will commence their program of study in the 2024 Winter session, the registration deadline is January 12, 2024.

Tuition and Fees

Tuition and fees are posted in your fees account on ACORN. Tuition and fee schedules, refund schedules, and other important fees-related matters are published by Student Accounts.

Some international MASc and MEng students may be eligible to pay domestic program fees (domestic and international PhD students already pay the same program fees).

  • Eligibility information can be found on the Student Accounts website.
  • If you have been charged international program fees, but are eligible to pay domestic program fees, you must present proof of status to the School of Graduate Studies. SGS will adjust your tuition accordingly.
    • Nov. 1 is typically the deadline to update your status for the change to be effective for the Fall Session; Feb. 1 is typically the deadline for the change to be effective for the Winter Session.

Some students who were registered during or before the Winter 2020 session may be eligible to ‘Register With Tuition Exemption On Basis of Progress Delays due to COVID-19’ in their final session of registration if they had been making good progress prior to March 2020, and then their progress was significantly impeded due to COVID-19 pandemic-related impacts.

  • Students who meet the basic criteria outlined above may email the Graduate Office at advising.masc.phd.ece@utoronto.ca to request full eligibility information and application instructions.
  • The deadline to apply for the Fall 2023 session is August 16, 2023.
  • The deadline to apply for the Winter 2024 session is November 30, 2023.
  • Unfortunately, students who first registered in the Summer 2020 session or later are not eligible to apply as per SGS policy.
