List of Approved Humanities and Complementary Studies Courses
Humanities and Social Science (HSS) Courses
It has been said that the purpose of a liberal education is to liberate the individual from the parochialism of direct personal experience. It is the desire of both the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering and the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board that you take humanities/social science elective courses directed towards this goal. In particular, you should choose courses that explore the central issues, thought processes and scholarly methods found in these disciplines.
This University of Toronto’s Faculty of Arts and Science teaches a large selection of courses covering all the humanities and social science disciplines, and we encourage you to explore and develop your interests by choosing, where possible, courses that appeal to you. Consequently our policy is to exclude courses that we consider do not meet the spirit of the above goals, rather than to list allowable courses.
For the most current and complete list of pre-approved HSS courses: please visit the Registrar’s website.
IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to ensure that you are taking a current acceptable Humanities/Social Science elective. This list may change from year to year; so approved courses in the past may not necessarily be currently approved courses. You must receive approval from the Undergraduate Office before enrolling in any course not on the currently approved elective list.
If you would like to take a course that is not on this list, you can submit your request through the Registrar’s website.
IMPORTANT: “Y” courses that are completed within one term will count as a single course in the term that the course is taken only. Full-time students enrolled in such courses are required to maintain a full 2.5 course load in each and every term of their program.
Complementary Studies (CS) Courses
Any approved Humanities/Social Sciences course (see above) may be used to serve as a CS elective. In addition, students may take Faculty of Arts and Science courses in order to fulfill their Complementary Studies requirements. Please consult the Undergraduate Office (askece@ecf.utoronto.ca) before enrolling in courses for final approval.
