Degree Programs

ECE offers programs of study leading to the Master of Applied Science (M.A.Sc.), Master of Engineering (M.Eng.), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees. It is important that applicants select the appropriate degree program to ensure efficient review of their application. Please note the main distinctions between the degrees:

  • The M.A.Sc. provides advanced study and research in a major field. The M.A.Sc. is a full-time program and requires the completion of courses, a thesis proposal, and a research thesis. The M.A.Sc. is the recommended prerequisite for admission to the Ph.D. program.
  • The M.Eng. provides advanced training to individuals who wish to work or practice in the field of engineering. The M.Eng. is a course-based degree and may be completed on a full- or part-time basis. The M.Eng. is not a research degree and is not the recommended prerequisite for admission to the Ph.D. program.
  • The Ph.D. is intended for exceptional individuals who wish to pursue a career in fundamental or applied research. The Ph.D. requires the completion of courses, a field comprehensive examination, a thesis proposal and a research thesis. Applicants to the Ph.D. must hold the equivalent of an M.A.Sc. degree with thesis.
